Tallinn 2014

Earlier this year, the Henry Jones Organ from Edington Priory Church was dismantled and transported to Tallinn in Estonia by three representatives from the Gustav Adolf School, where the organ has now been rebuilt.

The school organised an Organ Festival from 6th - 12th June to celebrate the organ’s commissioning, and on 4th June a group of 22 people set off from Edington and the surrounding area to visit Tallinn.

We had all made our own arrangements to get to Tallinn, and most of us arrived on the afternoon of Wednesday 4th June. We were met and taken to our hotels to settle in and find our own way around the beautiful medieval city centre to find our supper.

Next morning we gathered to be shown Tallinn and the surrounding bay, with lunch at the Seaplane Harbour. That evening we had a short reception and tour of the school, following which we were treated to a lovely meal overlooking Tallinn’s rooftops. What a view!

On Thursday afternoon we all met for a reception at the Tallinn City Hall and were entertained with music and refreshments. Later, we regrouped at the Gustav Adolf School for the official presentation of the Henry Jones Organ to the school. There was a formal handing over of the organ, with documents signed by their Headmaster and our Vicar.

Brian Martin from Bratton was asked to play on this occasion, and we were all impressed by the school choir and orchestra who showed great talent and were very entertaining. We all admired the organ, which had been fitted into a lovely room decorated with shades of blue and a gold cornice. The organ pipes had been very cleverly decorated by the school’s art department to coordinate with the décor, and the result was stunning. We also attended a second recital on the organ by an exceptional Finnish organist.

The medieval city of Tallinn is very beautiful indeed. We all enjoyed the various restaurants in the Old Town and were guided around the area by three English speaking staff from the school, who showed us not only the city, but the surrounding area as well. The hospitality and generosity we encountered made our visit to this beautiful city quite extraordinary.
