Jazz at the Priory

There was a great atmosphere when some 260 people turned out for a return visit by Cass Caswell and the Allstars, playing at Edington’s 6th annual jazz concert on 31st July 2009.

Out in the car park the rain held off, making the bar and barbecue a relaxing place to meet and chat over a pint of Moles Best. Inside the church the pews had been rearranged to face the stage on the north wall, where Cass Caswell and the band were belting out popular standards that included China Boy and Royal Garden Blues. Vocalist Maggie Reeday joined the band for numbers like I got rhythm, Kansas City, and Honeysuckle Rose.

When the Allstars took a break, it was the turn of the Edington Barber Shop Quartet to entertain us in their inimitable style. Flanders and Swann’s classic The gas man cometh was followed by For me and my girl, Now is the hour and the Irish blessing, concluding with an encore of Let’s get together again.

Amongst those who worked so hard behind the scenes to make the evening a success, Russell Lewis deserves special mention, together with Sheila Pinson for the PCC and Sue Davies on the box office.
