Jazz night

Cass Caswell and the Allstars made a welcome return to the stage at Edington Priory church on 29th July 2011.

Visitors from Derby, Nottingham and Hampshire helped to swell an audience of over 200 people for Edington’s 8th annual summer jazz evening. This popular event once again included a bustling barbecue and marquee bar in the church car park and – following last year’s change to the established layout – the stage returned to its familiar location opposite the south door of the church.

The first part of the evening featured popular standards like Creole Love Call, first recorded by Duke Ellington in 1927, and Royal Garden Blues, named after the eponymous gardens in Chicago. Then, before the first interval, Tom Tims gave us his rendition of Petit Fleur on the soprano saxophone. Composed in the 1950s by Sidney Bechet, the number was later made famous by the clarinettist Monty Sunshine, playing with the Chris Barber Jazz Band.
After a break for refreshments the music continued with numbers that included Basin Street Blues, China Boy, and Up the Lazy River. Couples began to drift out onto the dance floor as the band struck up popular standards like Sweet Georgia Brown, and the music continued with Duke Ellington’s Mood Indigo and In a Mellow Tone. Later, Edington’s own Michael Lukes got a warm welcome as he joined the band on stage for a guest appearance with his soprano saxophone.
