Pipes ‘n’ Pizza at the Priory

Twelve young would-be organists aged between eight and 18 from around the region descended on Edington Priory Church to take part in a ‘Pipes ‘n’ Pizza’ workshop on Saturday 1st November.

The event was part of an initiative recently set up by the Diocese of Salisbury called ‘PipeUp!’ to inspire and create the next generation of organists. The youngsters were introduced to Edington’s new instrument by Richard Godfrey, the co-ordinator of the scheme, and local teacher and organist, Chris Totney.

After a brief talk and demonstration, an eclectic mix of music followed, some having originally been written for instruments including the piano and trumpet, together with an interpretation of a show song and a pop song! It is hoped that many of them will be inspired to take up the organ permanently and, because the scheme is subsidised by the Tindall Trust, teachers are able to offer lessons to pupils at a reduced rate.

Following an interview with BBC Radio Wiltshire, the youngsters were rewarded for a hard morning’s work and play when a mountain of pizzas arrived, ensuring that the workshop ended on a high note!
